Written in 1926 and dedicated to Col. Osmun Latrobe, Regimental Commander and the officers and men of the Fourth U.S. Cavalry.

Sousa was a dedicated horseman, no doubt spurring his musical interest in the U.S. Army’s colorful cavalry units. His horse (name Patrician Charley) threw him in 1921, permanently injuring his shoulder. He was forced to adopt a conducting style where he swung his arm from the elbow rather than the shoulder.
