J.F. Zimmerman, president of the University of New Mexico, requested this march from Sousa. He asked that it honor the entire state and not just his school. Sousa’s dedication reads, “To Governor R.C. Dillon and the people of New Mexico.”
Although the march contains original material, it also features traditional Spanish, Indian and American melodies of New Mexico. Tunes include La Desgracia, Peña, Recuerdas de Amistad, and the state song, O, Fair New Mexico.
