SOUSAMUSIC.COM is now online – the newest version of the oldest Sousa site on the Internet. In 1996 I started the first John Philip Sousa website on the web, and over the years it’s been the #1 resource for information about Sousa’s musical works and his amazing life story. Today that site has evolved and I’m really excited to move it forward! There is so much more available on the net these days – with new technologies to connect it all – and I believe a central site with quality curated content is needed more than ever.
This site has expanded content (check out our new march pages), plus we’re mobile-friendly and connected to social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter & YouTube. The John Philip Sousa Facebook page is run by Jari Villanueva and myself, with interesting photos and historical tidbits posted almost daily. Our Twitter account (@sousamusic1) and YouTube channel are just getting started but keep an eye out for all the new stuff we have to share. We also plan to feature content by Loras Schissel of the Library of Congress and others who have Sousa stories and info to share.
Onward and upward!

My grandfather Leonard Danna played the euphonium in 1920 traveled overseas with John Philip Sousa. I have photos and documentation if you want to add him to the list thank you. He played the French horn also. Sincerely John Danna
As a boy, I loved Sousa’s music (who wouldn’t) and was told my paternal grandfather had played in his band-clarinet. Although my grandfather passed in 1931 and was unavailable for comment, I since learned that the band my ancestor played in was that of Frederick Innes, intead. My grandparents met and married in 1909 during a San Francisco exposition hosting Mr. Innes’ band. Grandma Pearl worked at a YWCA booth there.
The year Grandma Pearl passed, 1965, was the year I became passionately fond of the life and times of America’s greatest musician and composer. Even today I feel I was born 100 years too late! I am also interested in anything, however scarce, having to do with Mr. Innes and his career. Thank you all.
Dear Mr. Ewing,
There are six to eight pages devoted to the band of Frederick Innes in “Bands of America” by H.W. Schwartz, Doubleday & Co, 1957 which has been reprinted and available from any number of online book resources.
Sincerely,
Barry Owen Furrer
